Project #: 98-1106 Dear Mr. Stoops: A follow-up visit to the Mason residence located at 2254 Lilac Lane in Spring Park, Minnesota, was conducted on October 20, 1998. Present during the site visit was Mr. Bruce Vang, inspector from the City of Orono, and Tom Mason, owner of the residence. The purpose of the meeting was to. review the questions that the inspector might have regarding the restoration process and. established a method by which to proceed. At the time of this visit, the owner had removed a significant amount of the sheetrock and other framing so that a better view of the roof structure could be seen. The only other difference from our previous visit was that the roof now has some thin plywood over it in order to better keep the weather out. In our discussion with Mr. Vang, it was explained that, due to the extensive damage done by the tree falling on the. roof and wall, it will be necessary for this portion of the restoration not only to be acceptable structurally but also meet the current energy code requirements. Several alternates were discussed; however, the one method that appeared to be the least disruptive to the reconstruction process is to install Douglas Fir 2 x 6's spaced at 24" o.c. with the space between, i.e. approximately 5 %Z" filled with a rigid board polyisocyanurate type of insulation. The roof sheathing is.to be.'/4" thick 5 plywood that is glued and screwed to the tops of the 2 x 6:s joists. Due to connection concerns at the roof valleys, it will be necessary to replace the gypsum board ceiling with %" AC plywood which will also be glued and screwed to the bottom of the 2 x 6's. Of course, the polyethylene vapor barrier will be installed between the V plywood and the-.2 x 6's. In addition, at the valley where the existing.2 x 4 joists are present on the other side of the valley rafter, %" plywood Will- need to be attached for a distance of approximately 2'. In addition as before, the connection at "the valley will need to be made with screws, glue, and metal plates. Other areas needing repair will be the east wall with" the window that the tree damaged and, in the southeast corner of the home, the rotted studs in the wall will need to be replaced before the roof 2850 Metro Drive, Suite 523 Bloomington, MN. 55425 * (612) 854-4511 * Fax: (612) 854-3126 Mr. Jim Stoops Page 2 October 21, 1998 can be installed. It should also be noted that the valley rafter was spliced near the intersection with the exterior wall indicating previous rotting and repair at that location.
